Day 1 Race Report by Andrew McIrvine - La Reponse

As we left the Cowes river entrance we suddenly hit gusts of 30 knots suggesting the forecast was not quite correct - we did a quick turn back to collect No 3 jib!

The boats in Class 1 are all well sailed and know each other well which made for an excellent mix. Sadly the other 3 classes were rather depleted, possibly put off by the early conditions, which meant all classes started together but raced different courses.

The first race was a simple windward-leeward. Well it appeared simple, go to the orange inflatable marks we were told. Therefore the leading three boats went past the white inflatable marks thinking they must be for the smaller classes. Suddenly they realised that orange meant the colour the much faded buoys must once have been and turned back to round with boats from Class 2!

Salvo had been the boat in Class 1 that had first worked this out and led on the water for most of the way and won comfortably on corrected time. With strong NW wind and gusts of 33 knots, some boats experienced fun on the spinnaker runs. Zero 2 were second and La Réponse 3rd.

The second race was a 2 hour trip round the Solent with a short beat followed by a fetch to NE Gurnard and then a long run from there to Wootton creek via Artemis and a beat back. Tactically it was interesting as the tide was against for all the run and the tricky decision was how long to stay north and when to cross the main channel. This leg was a gift to the new Farr 280 which flies downwind but struggles upwind against longer and heavier boats. Salvo held onto the bigger boats on the fetch and run but lost out on the final beat. They had a big lead at the leeward mark but were overhauled by Zero and nearly caught on the line by La Réponse. Amazingly Salvo and Steamy managed a dead heat on corrected so were given equal 3rd. Zero II managed another second. Overall in class one La Réponse were on equal points with Zero but winning the last race broke the tie and she gains the Clarkson Cup for 2015.

Magnanimous in defeat Zero II, the winners in 2014, bought the champagne as all celebrated back in Cowes. The weather was extraordinary having started grey and blustery and ending in a perfect summer's day. Thanks go to the Royal Southampton YC for laying on an excellent days racing.
