Wednesday Evening Race Report 14th June 2017
After a week's gap due to bad weather, the Wednesday evening A series racing continued with Big Wednesday on a sunny and warm evening, which might have more accurately been called Middle-Sized Wednesday, as several regularly attending boats were not around to join in the fun.
A south easterly breeze of 9 knots falling gently during the evening, and a falling tide,presented Kathy with a series of choices of windward-leeward courses. The upwind legswere helped by the ebbing tide.
One or two competitors decided to visit the windward mark before the start and discovered that sailingdownwind against the tide wasa lot slower than the beats, and ended up quite late across the line.
In the XOD class, X21 Satu made that mistake, but by the second leeward mark they were back up with the fleet and eventually made their way towards the front of the fleet, finishing second to X96 Fantasy
In Class 3, Cockleshell had a good race pulling ahead of the Class 3 fleet, and along with the rest of her fleet made up the five minutes head start of the XOD fleet, and ended up as the first boat to cross the line overall.
Class 2 had a hotly contested start, and on an ebbing tide it was inevitablethat one of the fleet would end up early at the start, and Uproar took the chance,and found thattrying to sail back to the line took a lot longer than crossing the line in the first place. They did manage to pull back a lot of distance during the race and ended up with a third place, with Fearnought coming home first.
Class 1 featured the wayward Waywoh, whose visit to the windward mark before the start cost dearly, and they finished close to thetwo handed sailed Sigma 38 Light at the back of the fleet.New arrival J/109 Jago won the race, in a one-two for J boats.
