HRSC Wednesday "B" Series – Race 12 July 2017

On a cool but dry evening, the race committee motored out to the proposed starting area in the vicinity of Bald Head buoy to find little or no wind. At 18.30 the answer pennant was hoisted announcing a postponement of racing until the wind filled in. Initially, we had but 2Kn breeze from the NE which was no good to man or beast. Although some 5 XODs had come to the starting area, all but one decided that there would not be any racing and set off back towards the river entrance.

With an ever easing ebb tide, which was due to turn by 19.30 and the wind increasing to a full 4.5Kn, the committee lowered the postponement flag at 18.44 and raised the warning signal for the XODs at 18.45, having first noted that all boats were now able to make progress against the tide. This obviously caused a bit of a panic for the XODs who had started to go home, for by 18.55 when the starting signal was given only XOD "Satu" was anywhere near the line. All the others but one started at various intervals during the start sequence for the other classes. The starts for the other classes continued in sequence. The course was the same for all classes being start at Bald Head, leave Coronation to Port, leave Bald Head to port until the committee had had enough!

At the end of round 1 there was a bit of a snarl up at Bald head as several boats were sailing back down to Coronation as others were trying to make the mark. There were no known bumps, but quite a bit of shouting went on.

It was clear by the second descent to Coronation that 2 laps of the course would be more than enough for everyone as they had all ordered their fish and chip supper over the VHF before the race, so the race committee called a stop for all classes after 2 laps. First home was XOD X21 Satu (Andy Hamlett) followed by the first Class 3 boat, Cockleshell (Jonty Sherwill) followed by a whole bunch of Class 2 boats led by Imptish (Barny Smith) closely followed by Two Frank ( Olly Love). In Class 1, first home and class winner was the Etchell Waywoh (John Cook) with La Nef IV (Peter Noe) and Light (Rob Denning)

Whilst the course proved to be just a shy reach followed by a very shy spinnaker run, at least all boats managed to complete the course in a breeze that was mainly less than 5 Kn.

All were back in the club house in good time where Sam Flint had kept the long awaited fish and chips nicely warm for all.
