Hamble River SC , best known for running the ever popular Winter Series, revealed one of the best kept secrets in Solent racing when it threw open its Wednesday night racing for one evening on 19th June and saw some 29 boats hit the race course. Club members enjoy some 25 Wednesday night races as part to their membership and attract a fleet usually encompassing about 20-25 boats ranging from XOD racing one design to IRC boats. The first start is at 18.35 in the vicinity of Bald Head and is followed by a late supper and usually a lot of banter back at the club

Big Wednesday ran smoothly under PRO Kathy Smalley who catered for an expected failing breeze and a plethora of forecast wind directions by setting a good star course. In the event the wind held up at about 10 knot dropping slowly to 7 knots and the shorter legs kept the entire fleet sociable without spoiling the racing although the bigger boats were kept busy changing gear for each leg.The hotter XODs and those boats with suitable asyms or code 0 jockeyed against their white sailed peers on a reaching first leg followed by a series of short but still tactically challenging runs and beats with a good beat home with the tide to finish the evening.

Dux (Elliot Motherwell) in the XOD fleet together with in Mist (Andrea Undraa & Ross Elliston) in class 2 took bullets and both look, baring upsets, to be taking the overall A series in their respective classes at the conclusion of next Wednesdays racing. Both Class 1 and Class 3 will be heavily contested next week with Needlework (Peter & Ann Smith) in Class 3 winning but fighting off Forethought (Mike James) in second place both last night and overall. Similarly in Class 1 Hot Rats 9Robbie & Lis Robinson) not only pulled back from second place at the first windward mark to take first overall with a commanding lead but la Nef (John Noe) snatched second place by 5 seconds on corrected from Wee Bear (Chudziak, Horner & Malas) to leave Hot Rats and Wee Bear 1 point apart as they go into the concluding race next week. Special mention should be made of Rampion owned by the Annabel & Alastair Shove who put in their first race ably supported by their friends and workmates to pull off a creditable 4th in the largest class together with the return of the Commodore and his wife double handed in Implacable (Trevor & Phillipa Pountain) .

Next week sees the last A series race with with the inter series pursuit race the week after before the first Wednesday of the B series.
