HRSC B2 Wednesday Evening Racing 19th July 2017

HRSC B2 -Race Report

In a marked change from previous weeks, the race committee headed out of the river at 1730 for B Series Race 2 into a strong breeze (25+ knots) and the aftermath of some serious afternoon rain. The 'Y' flag was swiftly hoisted. Fortunately by start time the wind had dropped to a more manageable 15 knots and the sun even made an appearance, heralding a rather lovely evening of racing.

With a limited amount of water to play with, and the main channel out of use due to Cruise ship departures, the race team set up a series of windward/leewards on the Hillhead shore, with a two sail reach to get there from the Bald Head startline, returning to Hamble Point to finish. Following the race the PRO was heard to say that he would have finished everyone up river by the club house IF he'd known the wind was to drop!

First to go were four XODS, the fleet depleted by a large HRSC attendance at Cowes Classic Week. 2017 newcomer, 'Estelle' powered round the course to a convincing win, followed by 'Lark' (also out for the first time in 2017), 'Dolphin' and 'Fearless'.

Second up, Class 3 were rather shy of the line, and after a rapid trip round the course 'Cockleshell' corrected out just ahead of 'Forethought of Gosport' with the Folkboat 'Isabel' taking third.

Third were Class 2, often seen as the most competitive fleet, at least with regard to closeness to the committee boat at start time. With team 'Imptish' on race management duties, the crew on 'Polly' put in some early practice for August's Impala Nationals, speeding round the course ahead of 'Vlad the Impala' who took second. Ross & Undraa Elliston's Nicholson 33 'Mist' loves stronger breezes and they came home a very popular third for the night after the handicaps were applied.

The final start, Class 1, the bigger/faster boats, were led home by Etchells 'Waywoh' who were convincing winners on handicap from 'La Nef' and then 'Night Jar'.

Many crews retired to the HRSC clubhouse for delightful meal, cooked by our (voluntary) in house team, celebrating, or commiserating, with a couple of drinks.

B series race 3 will be held on 26 July, with the following week designated as the 'Cowes Week' Pursuit, for all those not on the Island that week.
